I recently stumbled across this story about ING Direct filing suit against someone for making too many ING Direct referrals. They also filed suit for trademark infringement since he was using their corporate name and trademark for his domain name. I can understand the trademark infringement but the suit over too many referrals doesn’t make sense to me. They said he made 918 referrals when he was only allowed to make 25 referrals. It appears he was using other people’s emails to get the additional referrals but if ING Direct didn’t want to pay him additional bonuses it seems to me they could have just not paid him the bonuses. This is somewhat concerning to me since I-like many other PF bloggers- have made more than 25 ING Direct referrals. I’m guessing they are only suing over the referrals because of the trademark infringement but I’m waiting to see how the case is settled.

I think that the questionable item here is how this person got to refer 918 people if the limit was only 25?
Another issue is that he used the banks name online for his site.
At least he brought them almost $250K in deposits however, which is pretty respectable. I wonder if ING also canceled 918 referred accounts.
It doesn’t seem like a matter worth suing over. ING Direct should be happy that this person is helping them get so many new customers.
