Another National City $150 Bank Bonus

National City has updated their $150 bank bonus deal. From their website:

$150 Gift Card bonus offer is available for new personal checking accounts opened from November 1 through December 31, 2008 with a minimum of $50 not currently on deposit at National City. Offer limited to one per household and available only to households without an existing personal checking account at National City and have not closed a National City checking account within the past 60 days. To qualify for bonus, a Visa CheckCard must be issued to you, an ACH direct deposit of your payroll, pension or Social Security benefit of at least $250 must be received, and at least 10 purchases be made with your CheckCard posted to your checking account within 60 days of account opening. ACH direct deposit must be established by using the National City Switch Service available by calling 1-866-622-3948 or visiting any National City branch. Your checking account must remain open in order for you to receive the $150 Gift Card which will be mailed to you within 60 days after all conditions have been met. $150 bonus is subject to 1099 reporting. Depending on the account type selected, you may earn interest on your checking account. For example, the Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for Elite Checking is 2.00% as of 10/12/08. The rate may change before and after an account is opened. Fees could reduce account earnings. Offer cannot be combined with any other offer and may be withdrawn at any time.

I went for this offer the other week and they seemed very reluctant to allow it, especially since I insisted on the $50 minimum. Not sure why these banks make these offers, then try their hardest to prevent you from following through with them. Kinda reminds me of a time-share gag in which you get a free weekend at a resort followed by a heavy sale’s pitch….No one leaves happy when nothing is purchased.

Sorry you had that experience. I haven’t had any problem really even though I’m sure some banks realized I was only opening the account for the bonus.
