Being an Extra

by andy h on January 6, 2006

Depending on where you live, one way to make extra money is to be an extra. I was an extra in the move “The Ringer” starring Johnny Knoxville which recently came out. It was a novel experience. Being an extra you mostly just wait around all day. They do feed you but otherwise you’re usually put in an out-of-the-way area and mostly ignored until they need you. It doesn’t pay well. I grossed $125 for working a 15 hour day. The hours are usually long, you rarely work less than 12 hours. That isn’t really bad though since you’re usually just sitting around. It can be boring though, be sure to bring a book or something to keep yourself entertained. I worked on that movie when I was living in Austin. They don’t make movies here so I doubt I’ll be working as an extra again anytime soon. Working as an extra on a movie is fun for a day or two but after that the novelty wears off and the pay isn’t good enough to justify continuing. I’d recommend it to anybody as something to try once though just for the unique experience.
